As part of The Wonderful World of Disney franchise, ABC has announced that it will be airing a live concert production of The Little Mermaid on November 5.
Auli’i Cravalho, best known as the voice of Moana, will be taking on the role of another Disney Princess in the form of Ariel. She will be joined by Queen Latifah as Ursula and Shaggy as Sebastian, with further casting to be revealed soon.
The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live! is set to be produced by Done+Dusted. Hamish Hamilton will executive produce and direct, whilst Katy Mullan, David Jammy, Raj Kapoor, Ian Stewart and Rochard Kraft (producer and director of the Hollywood Bowl production of The Little Mermaid) are also executive producers.
The live concert special will of course feature the iconic music from the original animated movie in addition to the Broadway stage version which was originally composed by Alan Menken. Howard Ashman’s film lyrics will also be showcased.
This will be ABC’s first go at the live musical genre, following in the footsteps of NBC and Fox who have previously released numerous musical specials over the years.
ABC’s parent company Disney is also working on a live-action film remake of The Little Mermaid, with Halle Bailey stepping into the role of Ariel, so fans of the movie are truly in for a treat in the near future.
