Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, said that many people who work for Disney would not want to work there if the strict new abortion law was in place.

Earlier this month, Georgia’s Republican governor, Brian Kemp, signed a legislation which bans abortions once cardiac activity can be detected – as early as six weeks. This law is set to take effect on 1st January 2020 if it can survive the courts. Of course, this has sparked outrage from women and men around the world, and Bob Iger believes it could deter people from filming there.

Films such as Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame were filmed in Georgia, both of which were huge box office successes, and set massive milestones in the MCU.

Bob Iger said “I rather doubt we will [continue filming in Georgia]. I think that many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. Right now, we are watching it very carefully.”

“If the law takes effect, I don’t see how it’s practical for us to continue to shoot there.”

On Tuesday, Netflix revealed that they would be taking a long look at their films and production investments in Georgia if the law goes into effect. For now, however, Netflix will continue to film there and are currently working with groups fighting the new law but in the future, they could also stop production there.

The film and production industry booms Georgia’s economy, creating over 92,000 jobs and filming over 450 productions last year alone. With a huge number of female-fronted MCU and Disney films coming out, it would not be surprising if this number halved by next year.
