Last month was quite exciting in the Disney community, as our favourite mice have just turned 90! To celebrate this momentous occasion, lots of special celebrations have been going on at the Disney parks and stores around the world.
In Disneyland Resort there was a special character cavalcade down Main Street USA. This included many rarely seen characters, such as Brer Rabbit, Marie, the fairy godmother and Merlin, parading along behind a car where the main mice sat. Mickey and Minnie we’re dressed in spectacular birthday outfits, which were white with rainbow pom-poms and sprinkles all over them, as well as matching party hats!
Crowds went wild as they waved to the birthday mice, whilst the vehicles in the cavalcade were decorated with banners and balloons of every colour!
There was also a very special birthday sipper available at select food and drink outlets, in the shape of Mickey Mouse, complete with birthday hat and matching straw. These were very popular and many people spent hours queuing to get their hands on one.
Over in Walt Disney World, guests were invited to sign a birthday card for the main Mouse and a special show took place on the castle stage in Magic Kingdom park. There were 90 characters present to symbolise 90 years of Mickey Mouse!
Whilst watching the shows, you might have wanted to nibble on one of the many special treats available for Mickey’s birthday. These included a delicious looking birthday push pop, a Mickey birthday crispie treat, a Mickey birthday cupcake (complete with mini cake and candle on top!), a fudgefetti cupcake, and a cookies and cream sorcerer cupcake! But there were also special Mickey burgers for those without such a sweet tooth! Most of these treats will still be available for the next few months.
In Tokyo Disneyland resort the celebrations continued and there was a rumoured eleven hour wait to see Mickey himself as fans rushed to wish him a happy birthday!
In Disneyland Paris Mickey’s Mouse party was already in full swing with the cupcake girls around the park (one for each land), who entertained guests and gave out special collectable badges.
There was a whole host of colourful merchandise available for Mickey’s birthday ‘The world’s biggest mouse party’, including special mouse ears, t-shirts and cuddly toys.
In Walt Disney Studios, a special ‘Surprise Mickey’ show took place, featuring the fab five and lots of dancing and fun! This show is still running and will do so for the coming months. Also there is a special collectable metal medallion available from the machines around the park.
Here in the UK there was lots of fun to be had at the Disney Store. From the beginning of November they were running special craft workshops where guests could colour in and create a special birthday card for Mickey. There was a virtual treasure hunt where you would use your phone to find ‘treasure’ around the store and unlock special surprises when completed.
On the day of Mickey’s birthday, 90 special keys were given out to the first 90 customers at each Disney store. These are similar to the ones given out at the open ceremonies in the morning, but show Mickey’s distinct colours of red, yellow, black and white. The flagship store in Oxford street was decorated for the special day, and fans were even treated to an extra special meet and greet and photo opportunity with Mickey and Minnie themselves!
All around the world bright yellow birthday badges were also handed out to fans attending the Disney parks and stores, as well as on the Disney cruise line ships, on Mickey’s special day, 18th of November.
Many celebrities and businesses got involved in the celebration too. The Eastenders cast incorporated Mickey 90 into their annual Children in Need performance of a mash-up of Disney songs.
The US channel ABC held a two-hour long celebration show, shot in LA on the 4th of November. Many celebrities were in attendance to celebrate Mickey’s Birthday, including Josh Groban, Meghan Trainor, Kristen Bell and many more. Performances of hit Disney songs were performed throughout the evening, such as ‘when you wish upon a star’ and ‘you got a friend in me’, and of course the main mouse himself made a grand appearance. Also, lucky audience members were given out free goodies, such as special commemorative Mickey Mouse ears.
There have also been a lot of new fashion collections from stores such as Cath Kidston, Levis, Lacoste, and more.
From everyone at Disney in Motion, a huge Happy Birthday to Mickey and Minnie Mouse!
